History and Characteristics of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The history behind this wonderful little breed of AKC Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies is quite interesting. This little breed dates back to the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. They were favorites of royalty and nobles of that time. If they hadn’t been included in the paintings of that time, they very well could be a lost breed! They kind of lost their popularity with the accession to the throne of William and Mary, who liked pugs. So because of this, some believe that for this reason, some enthusiasts of King Charles Spaniels decided to try to breed them to get a shorter nose! Soon the breed as it had been, disappeared, the longer nosed, flat-headed dogs, now had a much shorter face and a dome shaped head, and now called the King Charles Spaniel. Here in the US, it became known as the English Toy Spaniel.
Then in 1926, Mr. Roswell Eldridge from New York, offered prizes to bring back the spaniels pictured in the earlier centuries. Two years later, in 1928, they became their own breed. They didn’t want to lose the name King Charles, so in time it became Cavalier King Charles.
They come in four different color combinations. Blenheim, which is chestnut and white. Tricolor, is jet black and white with brown markings on the cheeks, over the eyes, inside the legs and ears and on the underside of the tail. The Ruby, a solid whole-colored rich red, and Black and Tan, which again, are jet black with rich, bright tan markings, on cheeks, over the eyes, inside legs and inside ears, on chest, and on underside of the tail. The breed standard for the ruby and black and tan is without any white, and also the hardest to get. The Blenheim spot which is a lozenge mark on the top of the head, can be found on both the Blenheim and tricolor.
This little dog is so versatile, and can adapt to almost any situation. Whether you live in an apartment or a house with a big yard, they will be just fine. They are a great family dog, good with children, yet are equally happy with one! They are a happy, playful, loyal breed, just looking to be a part of your family!
